To run any application in the browser either Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox we used secure runtime environment.
Java or Active-X Control provides runtime environment to the browser to run an application.
Microsoft Internet Explorer itself has Active-X Control application, and nowadays Mozilla Firefox & Google Chrome provide Active-X Control.
But the benefit of JAVAis that it supports all operating systems like Windows, Linux etc.
